DYK Sridevi rejected Chiranjeevi’s blockbuster movie over title issue

Sridevi and Chiranjeevi were two of the biggest stars in Indian cinema. While Chiranjeevi was ruling the Telugu film industry, Sridevi had gained popularity in both South and Bollywood. Their combination in films was always a big hit. However, an unexpected incident occurred when Sridevi rejected a movie with Chiranjeevi due to an unusual demand.

Director Kodandarami Reddy and writer duo Paruchuri Brothers planned the film Kondaveeti Donga with Chiranjeevi in the lead role. The story required a strong female character, and the filmmakers believed Sridevi was the perfect choice. Her role was that of a police officer, a character that required attitude and confidence, which suited her well.

When the filmmakers approached Sridevi with the script, she had only one condition—her character’s name should also be in the movie title. She suggested naming it Kondaveeti Rani or something similar to highlight her role. However, since Chiranjeevi was the main lead and a massive star at that time, the makers found it difficult to agree to her demand.

As the makers could not meet her condition, Sridevi refused to be part of the film. Eventually, the role went to actress Vijayashanti, and the film was released as Kondaveeti Donga. The movie became a blockbuster proving to be a great success for Chiranjeevi and Vijayashanti.

Although Sridevi missed this movie, she later acted with Chiranjeevi in Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari which became an industry hit. Interestingly, this film’s title included her character’s importance, and from then on, people started calling her “Athiloka Sundari.”
