Superstar Rajinikanth is a well-known name in Indian cinema famous for his legendary roles. However, a lesser-known fact about him is that he once wished to marry the late actress Sridevi.
Rajinikanth who was 13 years older than Sridevi always felt a deep sense of protectiveness towards her. They shared a close bond and it was common knowledge that only a few celebrities including Sridevi, Kamal Haasan, and director K Balachander, had Rajinikanth’s personal phone number.
Their journey together began with the 1976 film Moondru Mudichu where Sridevi then 13, made her debut as a leading actress. In this movie, Rajinikanth played the antagonist, and Sridevi portrayed his stepmother seeking revenge. This film marked the beginning of a strong professional and personal bond between them. They went on to act together in 19 films across various languages.
Rajinikanth even shared a close relationship with Sridevi’s mother and reportedly asked for Sridevi’s hand in marriage. According to a revelation by director K Balachander, Rajinikanth once visited Sridevi’s house intending to propose to her. However, during the housewarming ceremony, a power outage plunged the house into darkness. Interpreting this as a bad omen Rajinikanth left without proposing.
Despite not marrying Sridevi, Rajinikanth maintained a close friendship with her. While it was evident that he had strong feelings for her Sridevi’s feelings on the matter remained unclear.

Looking ahead Rajinikanth will be seen in the upcoming film “Vettaiyan,” directed by TJ Gnanavel, scheduled for release in October. The movie boasts an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Rana Daggubati, Fahadh Faasil, and Manju Warrier. Additionally, Rajinikanth is working on “Coolie,” featuring Sathyaraj and Shruti Haasan, marking his first collaboration with director Lokesh Kanagaraj.
