Keerthy Suresh recently opened up about her involvement in Nag Ashwin’s upcoming sci-fi film Kalki 2898 AD. In a conversation Keerthy revealed that she initially turned down a role in the film before eventually being cast as the AI character, Bujji.
Keerthy explained that when Nag Ashwin first offered her a role, she wasn’t fully convinced. Though she was eager to be a part of the project, she wasn’t entirely comfortable with the human role initially presented to her. Reflecting on her decision, she said, “Nagi offered me another role in the film, which I wasn’t sure of. It was a human role, I’m glad I said no to it now.” It was only later that Ashwin jokingly suggested a smaller role, asking if she would like to “peep through the wall.” This role turned out to be the AI droid, Bujji, which Keerthy was thrilled to take on.
Clarifying the situation further, Keerthy mentioned that the role she declined was not the one played by Anna Ben, who portrays the rebel character Kyra in the film. Keerthy was excited to voice Bujji, finding the experience both challenging and enjoyable. She shared her enthusiasm for dubbing, particularly in experimenting with various voice modulations to find the right tone for Bujji. “I didn’t understand initially when he said he wanted me to voice an AI bot. I had a ball dubbing for the role in multiple languages, giving 5-6 modulations in each language to see which would suit it best,” she recalled.
In Kalki 2898 AD, Bujji is an AI droid created by Bhairava, portrayed by Prabhas. The animated prelude Bujji & Bhairava introduces this futuristic world, along with other characters like SU-M80, played by Deepika Padukone, Supreme Yaskin, played by Kamal Haasan, and Ashwatthama, portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan.
Beyond her role in Kalki 2898 AD, Keerthy Suresh has a busy schedule ahead. She will appear in several Tamil films, including Raghu Thatha, Revolver Rita, and Kannivedi. Additionally, she is set to make her Bollywood debut alongside Varun Dhawan in Baby John, a remake of the Tamil hit Theri, directed by Atlee.
