Balaji’s parents, Poornima Ramarao and Balaji Ramamurthy, are not convinced by this conclusion. They have engaged an independent investigator to perform another autopsy, citing concerns about the unusual circumstances of their son’s passing.
Suchir Balaji worked at OpenAI for nearly four years before resigning in August 2024. Known for his significant contributions, he was instrumental in developing some of the company’s cutting-edge technologies. A co-founder of OpenAI described him as one of the organization’s most valuable team members.
In August, Balaji publicly accused OpenAI of violating U.S. copyright laws in the development of ChatGPT. His allegations were seen as critical to ongoing legal disputes against the company. Following his death, OpenAI released a statement expressing heartbreak and extending condolences to his family.
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Balaji showed early promise in technology. He joined OpenAI as a summer intern in 2018 while pursuing computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. He later became a full-time employee, contributing to innovative projects such as WebGPT, a precursor to ChatGPT.
