Dhanush’s co-stars extend support to Nayanthara
Actress Nayanthara recently caused a stir by releasing an open letter accusing Tamil actor Dhanush of copyright infringement. Following this, several of Dhanush’s former co-stars, including Shruti Haasan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, and Nazriya Nazim, publicly supported her stance.
In her Instagram post, Nayanthara revealed the challenges she faced while making her Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale. She alleged that despite repeated requests, the necessary No Objection Certificate (NOC) for using visuals from the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan was not provided. The movie, produced by Dhanush, marked the first collaboration between Nayanthara and her husband, Vignesh Shivan.
Nayanthara disclosed that instead of granting the NOC, Dhanush’s legal team filed a ₹10-crore lawsuit accusing her of copyright violations. The makers resorted to using behind-the-scenes footage captured on personal devices to complete the documentary. These developments prompted Nayanthara to release her open letter, criticizing Dhanush and the legal obstacles imposed on her project.
The letter gained widespread attention and support from several industry figures. Parvathy Thiruvothu reposted Nayanthara’s statement on her Instagram story, while actresses like Aishwarya Lekshmi and Anupama Parameswaran liked the post, showing their solidarity.
For those unfamiliar with Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, the 2015 romantic action-comedy was directed by Vignesh Shivan. It starred Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead roles and revolved around a policeman’s son who dreams of becoming a don. The film explores his relationship with a deaf woman, Kadhambari, and her quest to reunite with her father.
Nayanthara’s allegations have sparked conversations about creative rights and ethics in the film industry. The actress has received significant support from her peers, highlighting a growing concern about the treatment of artists and their work.
