Dhanush claims copyright on Nayanthara’s costumes
The ongoing copyright dispute between actors Nayanthara and Dhanush over the movie Naanum Rowdy Dhaan (NRD) has taken a surprising turn. The case, currently being heard in the Madras High Court, has sparked significant debate especially after the latest claims made by Dhanush’s legal team.
The controversy began when Dhanush, the producer of the 2015 movie, filed a lawsuit against Nayanthara. He alleged that she had used behind-the-scenes (BTS) footage from the film in her documentary without obtaining his consent or a No Objection Certificate (NOC). The disputed video clip lasting only 28 seconds, has become a central point of contention.
In the most recent court hearing, Dhanush’s lawyer, senior advocate PS Raman argued that Nayanthara violated the agreement she signed before working on the film. According to him as the producer, Dhanush holds copyright not just over the film itself but also over every aspect of its creation including the costumes Nayanthara wore during the shooting.
He stated, “We had a legal agreement that grants copyright ownership over all characters, props and costumes in the movie. By using the BTS clip, Nayanthara and her team breached this agreement.” He emphasized that the case has legal merit and should proceed to trial.
Nayanthara has strongly opposed Dhanush’s allegations, calling them an attempt to tarnish her reputation and discredit her hard work. Responding publicly on social media, she expressed shock over the lawsuit, which includes a demand for Rs. 10 crores in damages. The actress accused Dhanush of unfairly targeting her stating that such actions were intended to harm her professional image.
The streaming platform hosting Nayanthara’s documentary also entered the legal fray by filing applications in the Madras High Court. They sought to dismiss Dhanush’s case arguing that the claims were excessive and unwarranted.
The case has sparked widespread discussion within the film industry and among fans. While some support Dhanush’s stance on copyright, others see his claims as overly rigid particularly regarding costumes.
