The Supreme Court declined to grant bail to BRS leader K Kavitha, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam. Justices Sanjiv Khanna, MM Sundresh, and Bela M Trivedi stated that Kavitha should seek bail from the trial court, emphasizing the need for a consistent approach for all individuals regardless of their political status or financial means.

While the court acknowledged the importance of expeditiously addressing bail applications, it stressed the importance of adhering to established legal procedures. Additionally, Kavitha’s challenge to certain provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) prompted the court to issue a notice to the ED, requiring a response within six weeks.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Kavitha, highlighted concerns about arrests based on statements from approvers. However, the Supreme Court refrained from delving into the specifics of the case at that time.

For the unversed, Kavitha, a member of the Telangana Legislative Council and the daughter of former state chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, found herself embroiled in controversy when she was arrested on March 15 and subsequently remanded to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) until March 23. The arrest came amidst an ongoing investigation into a case, the details of which were not immediately disclosed.
