Several reports indicate that celebrities are hiring companies to buy fake followers for their social media handles. This boosts their follow count and value as influencers which translates into getting huge business deals. At least 10 celebrities have spent dollars to acquire services of companies which offer fake followers as well as likes and tweets. For example, the count of the fake followers helps this way…recently when a film, Breathe Into The Shadows was released on an OTT platform, the reviews that came were far from encouraging. A company was hired to get in touch with celebrities to Tweet good stuff about the web series for a good amount of money.
The move backfired as the celebs who Tweeted were trolled by the followers for promoting a boring film.. Mumbai Police have now summoned host and actor Gaurav Kapur as well as RJ Roshan Abbas in regards to the fake followers’ scam. The fake followers’ scam has not spared prominent faces like Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone were also likely to be questioned regarding the same. However, there has been no development yet. “Mumbai Police SIT has verified 25 people till now. A few of them have recorded their statements as witnesses in this case as of now,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Nandkumar Thakur, Crime Branch to the media.
