The number of COVID-19 cases in the US have reached 905,364 as of 10.30 a.m. (1430 GMT) on Saturday, while the death toll stood at 52,042 deaths. As per Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University, New York is the hardest-hit state, with 271,590 cases and 21,411 deaths.
This is followed by New Jersey with 102,196 cases and 5,683 deaths. Other states with over 40,000 cases include Massachusetts, California and Pennsylvania.
Unemployment
Much before the Coronavirus outbreak, the unemployment rate was near a 50-year low and now it will surge to 16 per cent by September as the economy is reeling under the pandemic. The Congressional Budget Office said that more than 26 million Americans have applied for unemployment benefits since March.
World wide Casulaties
The United States suffered the most fatalities. Italy followed with 26,384 deaths. Spain reported 22,902 deaths, France and Britain also reported over 20,000 deaths.
