In a refreshing departure from the norm, a Chinese company has embraced a progressive approach towards employee well-being. Pang Dong Lai, a retail chain in China’s Henan province, has introduced the concept of “unhappy leaves” to prioritize its staff’s mental health and work-life balance.

Founder and chairman Yu Donglai believes in granting freedom to every staff member. He acknowledges that everyone experiences periods of unhappiness, so he encourages employees to take time off when needed. Under this new policy, workers can request up to 10 additional days of leave at their discretion, supplementing the already generous 50 days of annual leave provided by the company.

What sets this initiative apart is that management cannot refuse these leave requests. Yu emphasizes the importance of employees determining their own rest time and ensuring they have ample relaxation outside of work. This approach underscores a commitment to fostering a supportive and positive work environment.

The decision to implement “unhappy leaves” reflects a growing awareness of workplace well-being in China. A survey cited by the South China Morning Post revealed that over 65 percent of employees experience fatigue and dissatisfaction at work. Factors such as low wages, challenging interpersonal dynamics, and a pervasive culture of overtime contribute to this pervasive sense of discontent.

Yu Donglai’s leadership extends beyond policies on leave. He has been vocal in denouncing the prevalent culture of long working hours perpetuated by many Chinese employers. Yu advocates for a more ethical approach, stating that forcing staff to work overtime deprives them of opportunities for personal growth.

To uphold his vision of a healthy work-life balance, Yu has instituted several employee-friendly measures. Workers are required to work only seven hours a day, enjoy weekends off, and receive 30 to 40 days of annual leave, with an additional five days off during the Lunar New Year festivities. This commitment to employee well-being aligns with Pang Dong Lai’s guiding philosophy of “freedom and love.”

Remarkably, despite its employee-centric policies, Pang Dong Lai remains financially viable. The average monthly salary for employees stands at 7,000 yuan (approximately US$970), demonstrating that prioritizing employee happiness does not come at the expense of profitability.
