Can Apple Watch Series 10 diagnose sleep apnea? Here’s what you need to know

Apple recently unveiled its Watch Series 10, boasting advanced health monitoring features, including the ability to detect sleep apnea. This condition affects over a billion people worldwide, with many going undiagnosed. With sleep apnea posing serious health risks, early detection is crucial.

 What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common disorder where breathing stops and starts multiple times during sleep, often causing a lack of oxygen in the body. The term “apnea” comes from a Greek word meaning “breathless.” There are two primary types of sleep apnea: obstructive and central.

1. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): This occurs when the upper airway becomes blocked, reducing or halting airflow. Causes include obesity, large tonsils, or hormonal changes. According to the National Council on Aging, approximately 936 million people globally suffer from OSA, ranging from mild to severe.

2. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA): This type happens when the brain fails to send the necessary signals to the muscles controlling breathing. Conditions that affect the brain’s ability to communicate with chest and airway muscles can cause CSA.

Sleep apnea can affect anyone, from children to the elderly, though certain groups are more susceptible. Experts estimate that 5 to 10% of people worldwide suffer from the condition. If left untreated, sleep apnea can increase the risk of various health issues, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic and liver problems.

 Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Recognizing the symptoms of sleep apnea is crucial for seeking timely treatment. Common signs include:

– Loud snoring

– Feeling tired or sleepy during the day, despite a full night’s rest

– Waking up multiple times during the night

– Pauses in breathing during sleep

– Mood swings and difficulty concentrating

– Morning headaches

– Restlessness and sweating during sleep

More serious complications can develop over time, including memory loss, sexual dysfunction, and cardiovascular problems. According to the Cleveland Clinic, identifying sleep apnea early and receiving proper treatment can help prevent these outcomes.

How is Sleep Apnea Diagnosed and Treated?

Doctors typically diagnose sleep apnea through a combination of sleep history, symptom checks, and tests like a polysomnogram (a sleep study) or home-based sleep tests. Treatments for sleep apnea range from lifestyle changes and breathing devices, like Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) machines, to oral appliances and even surgery in severe cases.

Apple Watch Series 10 and Sleep Apnea Detection

With its Series 10 model, Apple Watch introduces a groundbreaking feature: sleep apnea detection. Using an accelerometer, the device tracks breathing patterns during sleep. Apple employs machine learning to analyze these patterns and detect any irregularities that may indicate sleep apnea.

Users receive a monthly report highlighting any breathing disturbances that could suggest sleep apnea. If the data shows consistent signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea, the watch sends a notification, encouraging users to seek further medical evaluation. This feature is currently available in 150 countries.

Dr. Sumbul Ahmed Desai, Apple’s Vice President of Health, explained the importance of sleep apnea detection during the launch event. She stated, “Sleep plays a vital role in our health. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to excessive daytime tiredness, concentration difficulties, and serious health issues like hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cardiac problems.”

This health feature builds on existing tools from previous Apple Watch models, such as alerts for atrial fibrillation (AFib) and medication reminders. The Series 10 further enhances its predecessor’s capabilities, aiming to provide comprehensive health monitoring.

Specifications of Apple Watch Series 10

The Apple Watch Series 10 features a new, wide-angle OLED display with softened corners, making interactions like texting and entering passcodes easier. It has the largest display yet for an Apple Watch and is 40% brighter than previous models.

Additionally, the Series 10 is the slimmest Apple Watch to date, measuring just 9.7mm in thickness. It has an aluminum frame polished with silicone nanoparticles for added durability, and a titanium variant is also available.

Powered by the new S10 chipset, which is 30% smaller, the watch boasts a four-core neural engine and offers improved performance. The device also supports water resistance up to 50 meters and has faster charging capabilities, reaching 80% battery capacity in just 30 minutes.

 Pricing and Availability

The Apple Watch Series 10 starts at Rs 46,900 for the 42 mm GPS variant, with the LTE version priced at Rs 56,900. The titanium model in the 42 mm cellular version is Rs 79,900, while the 46 mm model costs Rs 84,000. Pre-orders are now open, with sales beginning on September 20.
