‘A Suitable Boy’ is a web show adapted by Mira Nair from Vikram Seth’s popular novel of the same name. A scene of two characters, one Hindu girl and a Muslim boy kissing in a temple is what has angered the netizens. In the particular scene, Tanya Maniktala’s character Lata Mehra is shown in an intimate position with Danesh Razvi’s Kabir Durrani in a temple. The series depicts many such themes like communal tensions and India and Hindu-Muslim relations in a post-partition setting.
It seems like the above-mentioned scene has hurt religious sentiments and an enraged section of the internet have united against Netflix and the show. Actor Rahul Mahajan expressing his dismay wrote, “A Muslim man kissing a Hindu woman during the Ram Aarti was ‘creative freedom’. But when a Hindu man and Muslim women would kiss in a mosque during Azaan, this creative freedom would go missing.” Presently, Indians are fuming over interfaith relationships, calling it as “love jihad.” The topic is being discussed in the socio-political discourse to come up with a law against it.
Recently, Madhya Pradesh became the fifth state to announce its intention of banning “love jihad” Twitter got on fire after netizens on Sunday afternoon expressed their distaste over a scene from the Netflix miniseries ‘A Suitable Boy’ which portrays a love story of an interfaith couple. #BoycottNetflix went trending soon after Twitterattis appealed to fellow Indians to boycott Netflix.
