Actress Swara Bhaskar has been doing a lot of web shows of late. The latest addition is the comedy-drama Bhaag Beanie Bhaag, which is currently streaming on Netflix. Along with Swara, Varun Thakur, Ravi Patel, and Dolly Singh have played prominent roles in the show.
Plot:
Beanie (Swara) is a 29-year-old lady who wants to get away from the stereotypical life of an Indian girl. She just cannot live the way the others do and want to pursue her dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. Just like every other Indian middle-class girl who faces a lot of struggle in getting into a creative field, Beanie also faces hurdles in the form of her parents and beau Arun (Varun Thakur). When things are going out of hand and she is engaged to Arun, Beanie decides to run away. The rest of the story is about Beanie’s journey of becoming a stand-up comedian.
Actors and performances:
Swara Bhaskar is a very capable performer and it is a known fact. Her choices of roles are always bold and stand out from the rest. The role of Beanie is one such character that is quite challenging for any conventional actor. Swara performs it with ease and manages to grab the attention throughout the series. Girish Kulkarni is exceptional as Swara’s father. Ravi Patel and Dolly Singh were apt in their roles of Beanie’s friends. The rest of the cast have done justice to their roles.
Analysis:
Bhaag Beanie Bhaag is a well-made show. The initial scenes hint us that Beanie is not happy with her mundane lifestyle and craves a change. The writers set it up for us in a clear way and we dive into the story right from the beginning. The show gives us a glimpse of hardships faced by stand-up comedians in the process of living their dream. The episodes are short and refreshing.
The scenes are quite relatable with all the Indian youngsters and their households. The comedy is subtle in a few scenes and was a bit exaggerated in a few others. The actors have come up with fine performances which helped the show to be engaging throughout the six episodes. We can also see some popular stand-up comedians making cameo appearances in the show. The music of the show is not outstanding but compliments the mood of the scenes.
However, we feel the story a tad bit stretched during some episodes. Barring those few instances, it is an enjoyable ride. Bhaag Beanie Bhaag will be a perfect binge-watch during this weekend with its sweet little moments that will bring a smile to your face.
